Make a Figma button navigate from Frame A to Frame B
Tests hands-on Figma prototype workflow. Good answer: enter Prototype mode, select the Login button, drag the interaction noodle to Frame B, set trigger to On Click and action to Navigate To.
WHAT THIS TESTS: Whether the candidate has actually built interactive prototypes in Figma or only produced static mockups. At a senior level, interviewers expect fluency in the prototyping workflow, not just awareness that Figma has a prototype mode. The question separates designers who ship clickable flows from those who export flat images.
A GOOD ANSWER COVERS: First, confirm both frames exist on the canvas. Second, switch from Design mode to Prototype mode in the right sidebar or use the Shift E shortcut. Third, select the Login button layer on Frame A. Fourth, drag the small circular interaction node that appears on the button and drop it onto Frame B. Fifth, in the Interaction details panel that appears, ensure the trigger is set to On Click and the action is set to Navigate To. A strong candidate also mentions setting an animation type such as Instant, Dissolve, or Smart Animate, and notes that the prototype only works when previewing in Presentation mode. They might also mention that the button itself should have a meaningful layer name for handoff.
COMMON WRONG ANSWERS: Describing a group or frame selection without specifying the actual trigger layer. Saying you right-click and add a hyperlink. Claiming you need to use a plugin, code component, or external tool to create the link. Forgetting to mention switching to Prototype mode entirely. Describing scroll or overflow behavior instead of navigation, which is a different feature set. Insisting that auto layout must be applied for the link to work, which is false.
LIKELY FOLLOW-UPS: How would you pass data or maintain state between these screens? What animation would you choose for a native mobile app versus a web dashboard? How do you handle fixed navigation or sticky headers during that transition? What happens if Frame B is larger than the device frame and needs scrolling? How do you reset scroll position when returning to Frame A?
ONE CONCRETE EXAMPLE: A candidate might say, I would select the Login button, press Shift E to enter Prototype mode, drag the blue noodle from the button to the Dashboard frame, set the trigger to On Click, choose Navigate To with a Smart Animate transition at 300 milliseconds, then press Present to test the flow. If the dashboard frame is longer than the viewport, I would also check that Clip Content is enabled and vertical scrolling is applied so the prototype feels realistic.
