Business Analytics vs. Business Intelligence

THE MENTAL MODEL: Business Intelligence (BI) focuses on description, telling you what happened in the past using a consistent set of metrics. Business Analytics (BA) focuses on prediction and prescription, using iterative exploration and statistical methods to determine what will happen and what you should do about it.

HOW IT WORKS: While BI uses established metrics to measure past performance (e.g., a dashboard showing last quarter's sales), BA involves a continuous investigation of business data. It applies statistical methods to find new patterns and insights that can inform future strategy, moving beyond simple measurement to active business planning.

WHEN TO USE IT: Use Business Analytics when you need to answer forward-looking questions. This includes developing new insights to drive planning, such as forecasting demand, identifying at-risk customers, or optimizing logistics. The goal is to gain a new understanding of business performance, not just to report on it.

WHEN NOT TO USE IT: If your goal is simply to monitor past performance against established targets using a consistent set of metrics, traditional Business Intelligence is sufficient. A sales dashboard showing performance-to-plan doesn't require predictive modeling. BA is for when you need to generate new insights, not just track existing ones.

ONE CANONICAL EXAMPLE: In a supply chain, a BI system might generate a report showing that a specific supplier's on-time delivery rate was 85% last quarter (description). A BA system would take that data, combine it with other variables like weather patterns, port traffic, and economic indicators, to build a model that predicts the supplier's on-time rate for the next quarter (prediction). It might then suggest shifting 10% of your order volume to a different supplier to mitigate risk (prescription).
