DHH Backs Danish Drone Startup as Europe Rearms

That stigma created a thirty-year vacuum in European defense innovation, leaving the continent dependent on American security guarantees and ill-equipped for the drone-centric warfare now visible in Ukraine. For software engineers, this matters because modern drones are primarily software, networking, and computer vision platforms rather than purely mechanical hardware. The sector is opening up exactly where European technical talent already excels, but only if capital and engineering culture shift fast enough to capture the moment.

What changed

As recently as 2018, nearly two-thirds of European investors excluded defense companies from portfolios due to ESG mandates, according to Eurosif. That capital drought starved European weapons and equipment makers just as global demand for autonomous systems exploded. Now the Danish government has committed another 50 billion kroner to defense procurement, yet finds few domestic suppliers ready to deliver. Ukraine has demonstrated that inexpensive, software-first drones connected by fiber-optic mesh networks can dominate battlefields against traditional armor. Danish startup Upteko, which builds open-source drones with local supply chains, is scaling after nearly a decade of quiet preparation. DHH, creator of Ruby on Rails and Shape Up, just invested in Upteko, explicitly citing Anduril as the model for what Europe needs to replicate.

What to watch

Whether European venture capital follows sovereign money into dual-use hardware. The continent still lacks an ecosystem comparable to Anduril in the United States, but the combination of redirected government budgets, proven battlefield demand for drone software, and respected tech founders entering the sector could normalize defense startups for European engineering talent.
