Grafana 13.2 adds multiple notification policy trees

Source: Grafana BlogMediumHow cards are made

Grafana says multiple notification policies are generally available in Grafana-managed alerting with Grafana 13.2, enabling independently managed routing trees.

Grafana 13.2 lets teams create named notification policy trees, assign alert rules to one, and manage each tree independently. Existing rules continue using the default policy until you assign them, so adoption can be incremental. This is useful when several teams share a Grafana instance but need separate routing ownership. Try it with a noncritical alert: create a named policy, route one rule, and verify the resulting notification before migrating more rules.

Interview question

What happens to existing alert rules until they are assigned to a named policy?

  • a.They switch automatically to every named tree
  • b.They are copied into every team policy
  • c.They stop evaluating until migrated
  • d.They continue using the default notification policyCorrect
Why?

Grafana says existing rules keep using the default policy unless assigned to a named policy.
