User Mental Models: What Users Believe About Your System

A user's mental model is their internal story of how your system works, based on belief, not facts. It shapes every interaction, from predicting button actions to checkout flows.
Why it exists
To explain the gap between how a system is designed and how it's actually understood and used. People need a way to make predictions about unfamiliar interfaces, so they build internal, simplified models to guide their actions. Understanding these models is key to building intuitive products.
The mental model

When not to use it
