Why it exists
Teams often have more A/B test ideas than time, traffic, or engineering resources. Without a system, they default to testing what's easiest or what the loudest person in the room wants, not what's most valuable. The PIE framework was created to replace gut-feel prioritization with a simple, objective scoring system.
The mental model
Think of PIE as a scoring rubric for your experimentation backlog. For each idea, you ask three questions: how much room for improvement is there (Potential)? How valuable is this page or flow (Importance)? And how hard is it to actually run the test (Ease)? By assigning a score to each, you get a ranked list that directs your efforts toward the most promising experiments.
How it works
PIE stands for Potential, Importance, and Ease. You rate each proposed test area on these three dimensions, typically on a scale of 1 to 10.
Potential
How much improvement can be made on the page? Look for your worst-performing pages based on analytics, user feedback, and heuristic analysis. A page with a high bounce rate or low conversion rate has high potential.
Importance
How valuable is the traffic to this page? Your most important pages are those with the highest volume of valuable traffic, like a checkout flow or pricing page. A poorly performing page that few users visit is not an important place to test.
Ease
How difficult will it be to implement a test? This considers both technical effort (engineering hours) and organizational complexity (e.g., getting buy-in from multiple stakeholders). A homepage test might be technically simple but politically very difficult, giving it a low Ease score.
After scoring, you sum or average the numbers to get a final PIE score. Ideas with the highest scores are tackled first.
When to use it
Use PIE when you have a backlog of test ideas and need to allocate limited resources effectively. It's ideal for product, marketing, and growth teams trying to build a data-informed experimentation roadmap and avoid decision-making based on opinion.
When not to use it
PIE is for prioritizing existing ideas, not generating new ones. It tells you which mountain to climb, not how to climb it. It's also overkill if you only have one or two obvious experiments to run.
One canonical example
A team debates two test ideas. Idea A: Redesign the 'About Us' page, which has a high bounce rate. Idea B: Tweak the main call-to-action button on the pricing page.
Idea A (About Us): Potential is high (9/10), but Importance is low since it gets little valuable traffic (3/10). Ease is high (8/10). PIE Score (average): 6.7.
Idea B (Pricing Page): Potential is medium, as the page is okay (6/10). Importance is maximum, as it's a key step to conversion (10/10). Ease is high, as it's a simple change (9/10). PIE Score (average): 8.3.
PIE directs the team to work on the pricing page test, as it offers a greater business impact despite having less 'potential' for improvement than the broken 'About Us' page.
